Mature Masculine Identity of A Man Called Otto Movie

No image available for this title
This research aims to analyze the representation of masculinity in the film A Man
Called Otto by examining how Otto's character reflects the concept of masculinity and
how Otto becomes a man with a mature masculine identity. This research uses qualitative
methods to analyze the data collected from the film dialogue, using various theories,
including cinematography, masculinity, gender norms, and gender performativity. The
research reveals that Otto's character becomes irritable and emotionally withdrawn after

losing his wife. Societal pressure to conform to masculine ideals of stoicism and self-
reliance strains Otto's relationships and leaves him isolated. Through Robert Bly's concept

of reconnecting with one's primal emotions and Judith Butler's theory of performative
gender, the film shows Otto's transformation into a man with a mature masculine identity.
By embracing vulnerability and seeking support, Otto challenges rigid gender norms,
ultimately fostering healthier relationships and a balanced understanding of masculinity.
