This study aims to analyze translation strategies and
translation accuracy of idiomatic expressions in Indonesian subtitles in the
Wednesday series. The method used in this research is a qualitative method by
identifying and analyzing data from Wednesday. Researcher collected data by
watching the Wednesday series, transcribe TL audio into a text document, marking
and listing idiomatic expressions in SL. After identifying the idiom, the
researcher examines the data to categorize different kinds of idiomatic expressions
according to Fernando and Makkai theory of idiom types, evaluates the translation
method according to Peter Newmark’s theory, translation strategies according to
Jan Pedersen's theory, and assesses the accuracy of the translation of idioms from
English to Indonesian by using Nababan's theory. The results of this research show:
First, according to Fernando and Makkai theory, there are four types of idiomatic
expressions were found in the subtitles of the "Wednesday" series: pure idioms,
semi-idioms, literal idioms and phrasal verb idiom. From sixty four idioms
analyzed, there are twenty five pure idioms, thirteen semi-idioms, nine literal
idioms and seventeen phrasal verb idioms. Second, the researcher found that
translators only used five of the seven types of translation strategies based on Jan
Pedersen's theory, which are generalization, direct translation, omission, subtitution
and specification. The most used strategy is generalization. Third, the level of
subtitle accuracy is very high. From sixty four data analyzed, there are fourty five
accurate data, thirteen almost accurate data and six not accurate data. It shows
excellent translation quality.
